The
Siesta Key Drum Circle
The drum circle takes
place on Siesta Key Public
Beach,
Sarasota,
Florida. It starts about an hour (or two) before sundown, every
Sunday.
Bring a djembe, a drum, a cowbell, a
shaker, a flute or anything that makes noise, and you are
part
of the entertaining team. Bring good mood, willingness to dance, desire
to listen,
or
curiosity to witness the belly dancers, and you are part of the
entertained audience. Embracing diversity. Everyone is welcomed to the
Siesta key
drum circle. It is the home of the African, Latin, Caribbean, Dance,
Rock'n Roll (...you name it...) rhythm. No rules, just fun. That is why
the Siesta key Drum Circle has grown to one of the largest
in the country. Thank you every one for keeping this a safe and fun
event.

Drum Circle History
The drum circle
started approximately twelve years ago. About half a
mile North from its current location, at beach access eight. There,
every week it was a little more drumming, than the week before. Soon,
the drumming was too loud for the neighboring condos. The drum circle
has moved to its current location, the Siesta Key Public beach. Over
the years, the drum circle has gone through several phases, where the
circle attracted belly dancers, fire spinners, acrobats, and all kinds
of interesting eye-candy. The drumming has evolved in parallel. There
where a lot of advocates for 'pure' Jembe music, significant Latin
influence and impact from all genres from disco to rock and roll. As
the drumming changed, the audience and the attraction factor morphed
with it. Dependent on the music, the belly dancers where in high gear,
or the fire dances came forth in full force.
Today, the drum
circle has a regular attendance of several hundred to
several thousand people. Those of us who where part of the incubation
of the event, would have never thought it will grow this big. One of
the lessons (or secrets) we learned was a lesson in community. The drum
circle, by its very nature is free, uncontrolled, and spontaneous. But
there was always a 'volunteer' (drummer) to control it. Resisting that
control, -- sometimes with patients -- allowed the drum circle to form
into what it is today. Free for self expression, free for making
mistakes, free for innovation, free for diversity, and last but not
least, free to have fun. That spirit made the drum circle one of the
largest in the country. It is a place where one can come to forget
about the 'everyday'. A place where one can walk on our beautiful
beaches, bang on a drum till one's hand hurts or dance till exhaustion.
A place where one can even awe at the free spectacle. The Siesta Key
Drum Circle has became a treasure for all, and a place to recharge
the body and the mind for the challenges ahead ...

Drum Circle News Bulletins:
hacked by bukibv hacked by bukibv Drum Circle Newsletter The Bay Area Drumming (BAD) Newsletter August issue is re-circulated with new content and corrections. Watch the emails for a distribution or click here to view ... Another good one! (10-aug-08) This week was exceptional! Acrobats showed up, and made a spectacle. The drumming started slow, but it kicked into high gear. Thank you ALL for making this a safe and fun event! Drummers! (28/jul/08) Drummers! When you do a drum solo, make sure the energy of the drum circle is raised (instead of lowered) Be critical of yourself, and admit if your solo substructed from the overall energy of the circle. Make sure you observe
the rule of 'N' drummers, 1/N time slice for one drummer. If you think you are an exception, there is much to be learned about life and music. Perfect Circle (3/aug/08) Another perfect circle. Big dancing, lots of people, fun all over. Too sad, that the authories put a dampener on it, by being 'too present'. We respect the job that is to be done, but can it be without killing the fun? There is so little of that going around these days. Have compassion. More News ...
